OUR PAST
Mangrove Mountain Ashram is associated with the physical and sexual abuse of children in between 1974 and 1989 to devastating effect.
We apologise without reservation for the appalling acts of sexual and physical abuse committed during the 1970s and 1980s by those within our movement who victimised innocent children.
While these events happened more than 30 years ago, the pain and suffering of children who were abused is a present-day reality. We acknowledge that our attempts to deal with these issues in a contemporary setting have been inadequate. For this we also unreservedly apologise.
Steps implemented
We have followed all recommendations of the Royal Commission Case 21, including:
-
Financial compensation for children who were abused
-
Disconnection with the Guru lineage or tradition
-
Appropriate Child Protection policies and practices put in place, and training programs provided
-
Spiritual mentors stood down from executive organisational roles
